One of the plays that opened the Globe’s first season was Will’s Julius Caesar. Luckily for us, a Swiss tourist called Thomas Platter went to a performance of it on 21 September 1599 and described it in his diary:

‘Saw the tragedy of the first emperor Julius Caesar, very pleasingly performed, with about 15 characters; at the end of the play they danced together admirably and gracefully, according to their custom, two in each group dressed in men’s and two in women’s apparel.’

That might seem a strange ending for this severe play, but some form of comical afterpiece with singing and dancing, known as the ‘jig’, was performed after every play, to send the groundlings home in a cheery mood.
